Selene Ash arrives in the city following a trail. She carries a list of targets, the experience of a vampire hunter and an alchemical compound capable of temporarily suppressing supernatural physical advantages. Her next target is Pandora Morningstar.
Pandora knows she is being followed. When Darius appears to warn her about the hunter, he finds a woman confident enough to welcome the danger. Their encounter begins a struggle over identity, desire and autonomy, while Darius watches with an interest his warnings do not fully explain.

02 / THE ATMOSPHERE
A city built for secrets.
Rain-darkened cobblestones, soot-stained brick and fog evoke the shadows and charm of Birmingham in the 1920s. Scarlet Trail reimagines that atmosphere as a steampunk dystopia of decadent elegance, where steam-driven machinery and retrofuturistic mechanisms share the streets with vampires lying in wait.
Luxurious drawing rooms open onto narrow passages. Railways and canals disappear into the mist. Vampires move within human society, protected by secrecy and institutions of their own. This is a fictional city shaped by a historical aesthetic, with room for technologies and dangers that belong to its own world.

THE VAMPIRE
Pandora Morningstar
Ancient, powerful and difficult to intimidate, Pandora is accustomed to setting the terms of an encounter. Her authority lives in her composure, her attention to detail and her understanding of other people's desires.
Selene fascinates her because the hunter arrives ready to fight. That intelligence and genuine danger make the encounter personal. Pandora recognizes hunger, attraction and possession easily; understanding what lies beyond them asks more of her.
THE HUNTER & ALCHEMIST
Selene Ash
Selene survives through knowledge and preparation. She studies exits, identifies weaknesses and changes the conditions of a fight before she commits to it.
Her alchemical research gives a human hunter a way to threaten ancient vampires. As her circumstances change, her intelligence, convictions and hunter's instincts remain central to who she is. Her struggle is to understand which desires she can still trust.
THE COVENANT'S REPRESENTATIVE
Darius
An ancient vampire associated with the Covenant of the Night, Darius works through information, patience and political leverage. He rarely reveals the full purpose behind a warning or a decision.
He understands Selene's threat before the confrontation. His response to its aftermath raises a more difficult question: why preserve a woman who also intended to hunt him? His presence brings the struggle for power into every private exchange.

The Covenant of the Night
The Covenant regulates vampire society, including the creation of new vampires. Its laws turn personal decisions into political consequences.
Selene's alchemy
Selene's compound temporarily suppresses vampiric strength, speed and healing. Her research can alter who is able to confront whom, and who gains the power to control others.

AFTER THE HUNT · SPOILERS — The blood, the memory and the choice
After the confrontation, Pandora transforms Selene into a vampire without her consent. Selene retains her memories, her reasoning and the convictions that led her to hunt Pandora. Her creator's blood also influences her attraction, her hunger and her need to remain close.
Selene understands what happened, yet finds herself questioning her own desires. The hunter and the newly created vampire coexist within the same person. This contradiction drives the later chapters, where memory, attachment and the ability to refuse become increasingly difficult to separate.
